Halos on 1 ct centres

The classic halo size. A 6.5 mm (1 ct) round centre takes 20 stones at 1.2 mm; a 6 mm centre 18–19; a 5 mm centre 16. The rule of thumb on our halo page is melee ≈ one fifth to one sixth of the centre width, which puts 6–7 mm centres squarely on 1.2 mm.

Double halos, inner row

A 6.5 mm centre with a 1.2 mm inner row and a 1.5 mm outer row runs to about 42 stones in two sizes — order both rows from one parcel so colour and cut match across the step.

Pavé bands and micro-pavé

Fine enough to read as a surface, large enough to set at normal bench speed. About 8 stones per 12 mm of row.

Setting notes at 1.2 mm

Halo work forgives a little — an oversize stone can be turned to the back — but a 1.2 mm halo with one 1.3 in it still shows at the top of the ring where the eye lands. Buy the halo plus 10–15% spares from one calibrated bag and the problem does not arise.
