Replacing a Missing Melee Stone — How to Match Size, Colour and Cut

Short answer: To replace a missing melee stone you need three things — the right millimetre size, a stone whose colour and cut read the same as its neighbours, and the ability to buy one without a wholesale minimum. The three questions a replacement stone has to answer

A repair is not a purchase decision — it is a matching problem. The stone either disappears into the row or it announces itself. Three things decide which:

• Size. A stone 0.1 mm undersize rocks in the seat. Oversize and it will not seat at all, or it lifts above the line.
• Look. Colour and cut decide whether the replacement reads the same as the stones either side of it. This is where most cheap melee fails — see below.
• Quantity. You need one stone. Most wholesale melee is sold in volumes that make no sense for a single repair.

How to size a missing melee stone

You cannot measure the stone that is gone, so measure what is left:

• Measure its neighbours. In a pavé row or an eternity band the stones are almost always one calibrated size. A gauge reading across two or three adjacent stones gives you the size to order.
• Measure the empty seat. The seat diameter is cut to the stone, so it reads slightly under the stone's girdle. Useful as a cross-check rather than a primary measurement.
• Count the row. On a full eternity band, stone count and inside circumference will get you close when the piece is too worn to gauge cleanly.
• When you are between sizes, order both. At $28 a bag with no minimum, ordering 1.4 mm and 1.5 mm to try in the seat costs less than a second shipment and a second wait.

If the row is already our melee

Then it is barely a matching problem. We cut from one standard raw material, and the cutting and polishing are the same from one order to the next, so colour, cut and polish do not drift between parcels — and the size comes back to the same ±0.1 mm. A stone ordered long after the parcel it belongs to still sits in the row.

Tell us the size and roughly when you bought it, and we send the same size again. That is the quiet argument for buying a whole row from one supplier in the first place: the repair three years from now is a two-line message instead of an investigation.

If the row is someone else's melee — or diamonds — then it is a matching problem, and we solve it by looking rather than guessing. Send a photograph and a gauge reading, and we lay candidate stones against that size and photograph them for you.

Why the replacement's cut matters more than the grade letter

Moissanite has a higher refractive index and considerably more dispersion than diamond. That is why badly cut moissanite is easy to spot — it throws far more coloured fire than the stones around it, and in a row of diamonds it reads as the wrong stone immediately.

But that flash is a function of the cut, not of the material. Moissanite cut and polished by hand, to proportions chosen to hold that dispersion down, sits far closer to a diamond's behaviour than fully machine-cut material does. Colour is the second failure point. Cheap melee skews blue, grey or yellow, and a single off-colour stone in a set row is more visible than one that is slightly the wrong size — the eye tracks colour breaks along a line before it notices height.

This is the practical difference between $28 and the $5–10 per carat sold on the large marketplaces. It is not a difference you can see in a listing photograph, which is why platforms that sort by price alone tend not to carry the higher grade at all.

Two things worth saying to your client

If you are replacing a diamond with moissanite, the client should know. Two practical reasons, beyond the obvious one:

• It will read as moissanite on a tester. A thermal probe alone can misread it; a combination moissanite/diamond tester will identify it correctly. Any jeweller who works on the piece later will know, so the client should hear it from you first.
• It changes what the piece is. For a sentimental repair on a modest ring this is often the right call and clients frequently prefer it to the cost of a matched diamond. For an appraised or insured piece, it is the client's decision to make, not an assumption to work around.
