Short answer: For accent and pavé work, lab-grown diamond melee gives true diamond optics and 10 Mohs hardness at a higher price; moissanite melee costs far less and out-sparkles diamond with more fire, at 9.25 Mohs. Choose lab-grown when the piece must read as all-diamond; choose moissanite for maximum brilliance per dollar.

When to pick which (for setters)
- Moissanite — budget-driven custom, statement halos, fashion lines, clients who want maximum sparkle.
- Lab-grown diamond — when the center is a lab diamond and the melee must match, or the client specifies “diamond throughout.”
How much of that fire is the cut
Moissanite's higher refractive index and dispersion are why it can read as the wrong stone next to diamonds — but how much of that shows depends heavily on how the stone is cut. Semi-hand cut and hand-polished moissanite, cut to proportions that hold the dispersion down, sits far closer to diamond's behaviour than fully machine-cut material. It is the single biggest reason two stones sold as “D/VVS moissanite” can look nothing alike in a set row.
A note on certificates
For moissanite, a GRA card is essentially a product receipt, not an independent grading report — don’t lean on it as proof of quality. Ask instead for video of the actual parcel and a stated size tolerance. At Caratura we hand-inspect and send video of your lot before shipping.
