Short answer: The colour question that matters for melee is not “D or near-colorless.” It is whether the stones are genuinely colourless at all. Low-grade moissanite skews blue, grey or yellow, and one off-colour stone in a set row is more visible than one that is slightly the wrong size — the eye tracks a colour break along a line before it notices height.
Why colour breaks show first
- White gold / platinum: any warmth or grey cast reads immediately against white metal.
- Yellow / rose gold: the metal masks warmth to a degree, but a blue or grey cast still reads as wrong.
- Around a colourless centre: the halo has to match the centre or it looks dingy by comparison.
The failure mode nobody lists on a spec sheet
Melee is sold by a grade letter, but the letter is assigned by the seller — there is no independent colour grading for moissanite the way there is for diamond. What actually varies is the raw material and what happens to it in cutting:
- Material. Poor raw material produces stones with a blue, grey or yellow cast that no grade letter discloses.
- Cut. Moissanite has a higher refractive index and considerably more dispersion than diamond. Fully machine-cut material throws far more coloured fire than the stones around it. Semi-hand cut and hand-polished moissanite, cut to proportions that hold that dispersion down, sits much closer to a diamond's behaviour. Two parcels both sold as “D/VVS” can look nothing alike in a set row for this reason alone.
- Consistency. A perfectly matched parcel of one grade beats a cheaper mixed parcel every time. Spec one colour across the lot and buy it as a single lot.
What to ask a supplier
- Is this a single lot, or pulled from mixed batches?
- Is the material hand-cut or machine-cut?
- Can I see video of the actual parcel before it ships — not a stock photo, not a GRA card?
- What is the stated size tolerance, as a number?
